How much memory is in your computer?

You’re planning to install a new office suite application on a computer, but it requires a minimum of 1 gigabyte of system memory. What’s the best way to determine how much memory Windows XP sees in your computer?

A) In the Control Panel, select the System applet and find the memory amount in the General tab.

B) Examine the Event Log for memory utilization information during the Windows startup process.

C) Visit the computer manufacturer’s web site for the specifications.

D) Open the computer case and visually verify the amount of installed RAM.

E) Shake the PC until all of the memory falls out and count the number of chips.

The answer: A) In the Control Panel, select the System applet and find the memory amount in the General tab.

There are many ways to check memory in your computer (i.e., the Task Manager, System information, etc.), but the System applet is probably the easiest way. Another quick way to launch the System applet is to right-click the “My Computer” on the desktop and select Properties.
