What is a null modem cable?

You’re probably familiar with the serial cables that are used to connect external modems with computers. There also exists another type of cable called a null modem cable. How is a null modem cable used?

A) To connect two modems to each other

B) To connect two computers without using a modem

C) To connect two Ethernet adapters together

The answer: B) To connect two computers without using a modem

If you want to connect two computers to each other, you can remove the modems from the equation and connect the devices using a null modem cable.

The incorrect answers:

A) To connect two modems to each other
Two modems will usually connect to each other using their native transmission medium. For computer modems, this is often a telephone line.

Two Ethernet adapters can connect directly to each other using an Ethernet cross-over cable.

D) To connect serial printers to a computer
Serial printers are rare these days, but they can be connected directly to a computer using a standard serial cable.
