Why doesn’t your LiveCD work?

You would like to use a LiveCD to assist with hard drive diagnostics. The LiveCD is in the CD-ROM drive, but the system boots the normal hard drive operating system when powering up. What’s the most likely reason that the LiveCD doesn’t work?

A) The BIOS must be configured to boot from the CD-ROM drive

B) The LiveCD contains an incompatible operating system

C) The CD-ROM hardware doesn’t support a bootable mode

D) The LiveCD contains an incorrect CD-ROM format

The answer: A) The BIOS must be configured to boot from the CD-ROM drive

To boot from a CD-ROM, the BIOS must first check the CD-ROM before examining the hard drive for an operating system.

The incorrect answers:

B) The LiveCD contains an incompatible operating system
The LiveCD compilations are designed to work properly without any additional configurations or settings. It’s unlikely that you’ll run across a LiveCD that won’t work on your system!

C) The CD-ROM hardware doesn’t support a bootable mode
I’m sure there must be a CD-ROM somewhere that won’t boot CD-ROMs, but I’ve yet to see one. Practically every CD-ROM in the world will boot a properly configured CD-ROM.

D) The LiveCD contains an incorrect CD-ROM format
The LiveCD image burning process makes it very difficult to make a mistake. Since the format is compiled together in the drive image, it’s almost impossible to create an incorrectly formatted CD-ROM.
