Security+ Frequently Asked Questions
There are currently two different Security+ exams available.
The SY0-601 exam was released on November 12, 2020. The retirement date for the SY0-601 Security+ exam is July 31, 2024.
The SY0-701 version of the Security+ exam was released on November 7, 2023. The estimated retirement date of the SY0-701 will be May 2027.
Once you pass any version of the Security+ exam, you earn the same Security+ certification. The Security+ certification is valid for three years.
The exam retirement date is only associated with the exam version and is not associated to anyone already Security+ certified.
The amount of time required to study for the Security+ exam will vary based on an individual’s study habits, experience, and available training materials. The average for most students is about two to three months. The total time will depend on how long it takes to learn all of the information contained in the CompTIA Exam Objectives.
Once you pass the Security+ exam, your certification will be valid for three years. You can always renew your certification for another three years, and the various methods for renewal are available on the CompTIA website.
There are significant changes between exam versions, and we highly recommend you only study from materials specifically written for the latest version of the Security+ exam.
